    GRACIOUS IN DEFEAT
I returned home yesterday, after the Mighty Mighty New England Patriots' impressive victory over the favored Pittsburgh Steelers, to find a gracious phone message from my friend Ben Kepple. The message began, "Chris, I'm just calling to say I HATE The Patriots, and I HATE YOU!"

Ben, it should be noted, has the unfortunate lot in life of being a Steeler fan. He even confidently predicted their victory last week. But after his initial outburst, he was quite conciliatory, promising to root for the AFC champs in next week's big game. As well he should -- we AFC types must stick together (unless, of course, it's the Jets playing in the Super Bowl, like that would ever happen). So kudos to Ben for being such a good sport. I like to think that had the game gone the other way, I'd have been as magnanious, but I'm glad that won't be necessary.

So it's back to the Big Easy for the boys in red, white, and blue. The experts have already written the Pats off -- yes, the same experts who predicted the team to end the season at 4-12, who said it would never beat Oakland, who figured the Steelers to win by ten or more points. They've all but coronated the Lambs, but they shouldn't place the crown just yet.

To paraphrase one CBS announcer (I can't remember which), in football there's offense, there's defense, and there are special teams. One very special team this year is the New England Patriots. Going into next week, there are many who will say they can't win. Tell that to the rest of the AFC.

    CALIFORNIA DREAMIN'
The three California Republicans vying to knock off Gray Davis in November met for their first debate last week. My thoughts in this week's Daily News column.
